Some evenings are built to be remembered. For two nights only, 90D hands its stage to two artists who have spent years turning sound and light into something you feel before you can name it.
Sonus Luminus began as a meeting between a pianist and a light artist who kept finding each other across Kuala Lumpur’s stages. Now they bring it inside 90D, level 50 of The Conlay, where the Big Bang hangs above a single long table.
At the centre sits Mei Lin Hii. Born in Miri, she became the first Malaysian classical pianist to make her recital debut at Carnegie Hall, was named Outstanding Woman Pianist in New York, and was later invited by Fazioli to record Bach’s Goldberg Variations in their concert hall in Italy. She has played for Krug, Dom Perignon and Louis XIII. On these two nights, she plays for you.
Around her, Jun Ong takes hold of the Big Bang. Trained as an architect and known for monumental works of light, including the five storey star that pierced a building in Penang, Jun built the installation that anchors every night at 90D. Here he plays it live, shaping its colour, scale and movement to Mei Lin’s hands in real time. When she presses a key, the room answers.
Between them, Chef Toraik Chua sends out eight courses that ride the same current. We will not tell you what you will hear or what you will eat. That is the point. The evening unfolds as one continuous piece, sound, light and food moving together, performed once and never repeated in quite the same way.
